Throughout our time exhibiting at the Koppel Project Hive with 'Utopia Through Nostalgia', we had the opportunity to host another event, aside from our private view because we had money left over in our budget. We wanted the event to be a special evening themed around the title of our exhibition, 'Utopia Through Nostalgia'. We conducted a few meetings to begin discussing potential ideas and decided that we wanted to create an atmosphere that promised of a better life, a 'better you', through looking back at old nostalgic adverts and films. We all began searching for these adverts online and found toothpaste adverts promising for better teeth, adverts promising cleaner clothes, better boobs etc etc. All the clips reflected upon the positive notion of a Utopian world. One of our artists who specifically works with film in his art practice edited the clips and put them together to make a film that we had on a big screen at the event. The result presented a journey through time and memory. The audio was removed, leaving only the edited image to speak for itself. Significantly shifting the content and context created new narratives. You can see a short clip of this film below.

Aside from the screening, we used the rest of the budget to buy in 'nostalgic food'. We ordered a candyfloss cart and bought in things like party rings, retro sweets, flying saucers, kipling cakes. The exhibition became an enlightening place where aspirational ideals were sold and promoted through familiar (and unfamiliar) popular TV and Film culture.

This event involved a lot of organisation and hard work. We wanted to aim this event more at critics and journalists with the urge to get reviewed. You can see our review here. It was a fun opportunity to see how creative we could be and it ended up being a big success.
